No risks seen with flu shot in early pregnancy
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Adding to evidence that the flu shot is safe for pregnant women, a new study finds no link between the vaccine and the risk of serious birth defects.
The study, of nearly 9,000 pregnant women who got the flu shot, found that about 2 percent had a baby with a major birth defect, such as a malformation in the heart or a cleft lip.
That was identical to the rate among almost 77,000 pregnant women who did not get the vaccine.
What's more, researchers found, women who got vaccinated were less likely to suffer a stillbirth (a pregnancy loss after the 20th week): 0.3 percent did, versus 0.6 percent of unvaccinated women.
Their newborns also had a lower death rate: 0.2 percent died soon after birth, compared with 0.4 percent of babies born to unvaccinated moms.
It's not clear if the flu vaccine deserves the credit. But Dr. Jeanne S. Sheffield, the lead researcher on the work, said it's possible the vaccine helped by preventing severe cases of the flu.
"Can we say for sure that it's the vaccine? No," said Sheffield, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
But, she added, these findings suggest that the flu shot is at least safe, and possibly has a benefit against stillbirth.
Sheffield and her colleagues report the findings in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other groups recommend that all pregnant women get a seasonal flu shot.
That's because pregnant women are more likely than other women their age to get a severe case of the flu or have complications, such as pneumonia. The flu is also thought to raise the risk of preterm delivery and fetal distress.
Still, Sheffield said, many women and doctors alike still have concerns about flu vaccine safety during pregnancy - especially the first trimester, which is when birth defects form and when most miscarriages happen.
But in this study, the researchers found that vaccination during the first trimester came with no increased risk of birth defects.
Despite recommendations to get the flu shot, most pregnant women do not. In the U.S., only between 10 percent and one-quarter of women have been vaccinated each flu season over the last couple decades, Sheffield's team notes.
Based on studies, that seems largely due to safety worries.
On the other hand, Sheffield said "it's amazing" how many women are unaware that the flu itself is considered a risk during pregnancy.
"The flu is a problem in pregnancy," she said. "But we have a vaccine to prevent it. And it's considered safe and effective in any trimester."
A CDC study published last year found "no unusual patterns" of pregnancy complications or newborn health problems among U.S. women who received the flu shot between 1990 and 2009.
Based on cases reported to the CDC's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, the rate of miscarriage was 1.9 per one million vaccinated pregnant women.

Taiwan's environmental minister is calling on the island's men to sit down when they urinate in order to keep toilets clean, drawing a mixed reaction from the public.
Stephen Shen, head of the Environmental Protection Administration, said Monday he himself had adopted the habit, and suggested other men follow suit so toilet seats will be ready for the next user.
An environmental official contacted by AFP Tuesday acknowledged the advice would be hard to follow in public restrooms, where urinals constitute the main facilities.

Israel ex-soldiers say troops abused Palestinian kids
Former Israeli soldiers who served in the occupied territories say that mistreatment of Palestinian children by troops is "routine" and occurs even at times of relative calm.
A collection of over 30 testimonies published on Sunday by Breaking the Silence, a group of ex-servicemen critical of army practices, says physical violence, often arbitrary, is used against very young children.
"The testifiers depict a routine in which Palestinian minors, often under 10 years of age, are treated in a manner that ignores their young age," says the 72-page booklet.
Entitled "Children and Youth: Soldiers' Testimonies 2005-2011," it covers a period after the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising, of 2000-2005.
"Although the events described here took place after the peak of the second intifada, at a time perceived as calm and uneventful from a ?security? standpoint, the reality that emerges from the testimonies shows that harsh treatment of Palestinian children continues unabated," it says.
In one example, a former staff-sergeant, unidentified like most who give testimony, describes a punitive raid on a neighbourhood in the Ramallah area following earlier clashes with Palestinians.
He said a dozen soldiers with wooden clubs "beat people to a pulp. Finally the children who remained on the ground were arrested. The order was to run, make people fall to the ground," he said.
"A slow runner was beaten, that was the rule," he said.
Another former staff-sergeant describes an operation against the West Bank village of Azzun, where stones had been thrown from a curve in the road at motorists from the nearby Israeli settlement of Maale Shomron.
"We got to the village, drove up to the houses closest to the curve, and then saw a group of children, 9-10 years old, running away," he said.
"First they ran, went onto the balcony of some house, and then the commander took a stun grenade and hurled it into that balcony. It blew up. I don?t think it hurt them or anything, but it made them run out of the balcony."
He describes a chase after the children during which his commander cocked his firearm and aimed in the face of one of them from close range.
"The kid was just freaking out, certain he was going to be killed, and begged and pleaded for his life," the soldier said.
"A kid has to beg for his life? A loaded gun is pointed at him and he has to plead for mercy? This is something that scars him for life."
The Israeli military said in response that Breaking the Silence had not provided it with sufficient background material to enable it to investigate specific claims.
"By compiling testimonies over long periods of times and refusing to provide additional details, the organisation proves its true intentions -- rather than facilitating proper investigation, the organisation seeks to generate negative publicity regarding the IDF and its soldiers," it said in a statement.

17 beheaded at party in bloody Afghan day
Taliban Islamist insurgents beheaded 17 party-goers, 10 Afghan soldiers were killed and two NATO troops shot dead in a new insider attack in a bloody day across Afghanistan, officials said Monday.
The party-goers, including two women, were holding a gathering with music in a southern Afghanistan village.
"I can confirm that this is the work of the Taliban," the Helmand provincial governor's spokesman Daud Ahmadi told AFP. "Two women and 15 men were beheaded. They were partying with music in an area under the control of the Taliban."
The hardliners were notorious during their rule for public executions and the suppression of music and parties.
Nematullah Khan, the Musa Qala district chief, confirmed that the villagers had organised a party with music, and a local official said he suspected that the two women had been dancing.
Secret parties with dancing women from a gypsy-type tribe are common across southern Afghanistan.
During their 1996-2001 rule in Afghanistan the Taliban, now waging a fierce insurgency against the NATO-backed government of President Hamid Karzai, also tried to stop the mixing of men and women who were not related.
"This callous act clearly demonstrates the insurgents' willingness to stop at nothing in terrorising civilians," said General John Allen, commander of NATO'S International Security Assistance Force.
He pledged the assistance of NATO troops "to help bring these criminals to swift and sure justice", while the US embassy in Kabul condemned the killings as "a shameful act".
The UN mission in Afghanistan said: "This criminal act is unjustifiable and totally disregards the sanctity of human life.
"UNAMA has repeatedly stated that the killing of civilians is a clear violation of international humanitarian and human rights laws and has called for the perpetrators of such reprehensible acts to be brought to justice."
Britain too joined in condemning the killings "in the strongest terms".
Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said: "I am appalled at the cruel killing of 17 people at a party.... The facts are still being established but early indications are that the Taliban were responsible."
The insurgents have in the past been blamed for beheading local villagers, mostly over charges of spying for Afghan and US-led NATO forces.
Haji Musa Khan, a tribal elder in Musa Qala district, said the region had seen a surge in such killings in recent months.
"We had three people beheaded during the month of Ramadan. Another person, the son of a tribal elder, was beheaded recently," he said.
Khan said the killings followed major military operations by Afghan and NATO troops in the area.
Hours after the beheadings, Taliban insurgents overran an Afghan army post in the same province in a pre-dawn attack on Monday, killing 10 troops, authorities said.
Four soldiers were wounded and six others were missing following the attack in Helmand's Washir district, senior regional police officer Colonel Mohammad Ismael Hotak told AFP.
Helmand spokesman Ahmadi confirmed the incident and said the attack was an "insider plot" in which some army soldiers helped the rebels attack the post.
If it is confirmed that the attack was facilitated by soldiers it will mark a new escalation in a string of insider attacks on Afghan and NATO security forces.
Two NATO soldiers were also killed Monday when an Afghan army soldier turned his weapon against them in a "green-on-blue" attack in eastern Laghman province, the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
"ISAF soldiers returned fire and killed the attacker," ISAF said.
The latest NATO deaths take the toll from insider attacks this month alone to 12 and to a total of 42 this year, making up around 13 percent of all NATO deaths in 2012.
NATO, which has about 130,000 troops in Afghanistan, has struggled to stem the attacks and they have become a major issue in the Afghan war, eroding trust between the two forces.
Taliban insurgents claim responsibility for many of the attacks, but NATO attributes most to cultural differences, stress and personal animosity between Afghan troops and their international allies.
ISAF spokesman Brigadier General Gunter Katz told reporters Monday that the attacks would not lead to less cooperation with Afghan troops as NATO prepares to pull out from the war in 2014.
"Let me clearly say, we are not going to reduce the close relationship with our Afghan partners. We assess that closer cooperation results in stronger bonds and increasing trust and friendship," he said.
"These incidents will not affect our operation. The campaign is on track, we effectively fight the insurgency and most importantly we continue to fight alongside our partners from the Afghan security forces."

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Tropical Storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.
Isaac was expected to cross the Keys by late Sunday, then turn northwest and strike as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between the New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large swath of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. - which includes the New Orleans area - to Destin, Fla. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and suggested that people begin leaving low-lying parts of the state. He also said he may skip a speaking engagement later this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa if the storm is threatening his state.
The storm was on a course to pass west of Tampa, but it had already disrupted the Republicans' schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds that extended more than 200 miles from its center.
Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac caused considerable inconvenience, with more than 550 flights canceled at Miami International Airport and about 150 from Fort Lauderdale's airport. There were scattered power outages from Key West to Fort Lauderdale affecting more than 8,000 customers, and flooding occurred in low-lying areas. No serious damage was reported.
Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. But while officials urged residents in southeast Florida to stay home, that recommendation was ignored by surfers and joggers on Miami Beach and shoppers at area malls.
In Key West, Emalyn Mercer rode her bike while decked out with a snorkel and mask, inflatable arm bands and a paddle, just for a laugh. She rode with Kelly Friend, who wore a wet suit, dive cap and lobster gloves.
"We're just going for a drink," Mercer said.
"With the ones that are brave enough like us," Friend added.
Along famed Duval Street, many stores, bars and restaurants closed, the cigar rollers and palm readers packed up, and just a handful of drinking holes remained open.
But people posed for pictures at the Southernmost Point, while at a marina Dave Harris and Robyn Roth took her dachshund for a walk and checked out boats rocking along the waterfront.
"Just a summer day in Key West," Harris said.
That kind of ho-hum attitude extended farther up the coast. Edwin Reeder swung by a gas station in Miami Shores - not for fuel, but drinks and snacks.
"This isn't a storm," he said. "It's a rain storm."
With a laugh, Reeder said he has not stocked up aside from buying dog and cat food.
The forecast wasn't funny, however. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but there remained much uncertainty about its path.
The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region.
Hurricane center forecasters are uncertain of the storm's path because 2 of their best computer models now track the storm on opposite sides of a broad cone. One model has Isaac going well west and the other well east. For the moment, the predicted track goes up the middle.
Florida Panhandle residents stocked up on water and gasoline, and at least one Pensacola store ran out of flashlight models and C and D batteries. Scott Reynolds, who lives near the water in Gulf Breeze, filled his car trunk with several cases of water, dozens of power bars and ramen noodles.
"Cigarettes - I'm stocking up on those too," he said.
Forecasters stressed that the storm's exact location remained extremely uncertain - a fact not lost on Tony Varnado as he cut sheets of plywood to board up his family's beach home on Pensacola Beach. With the storm's projected path creeping farther to the west, the Mandeville, La., resident joked he might be boarding up the wrong house.
"I'm going to head back that way as soon as we are done here to make sure we are prepared if hits there," he said.
Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for seven deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage just north of the island chain.
In Tampa, convention officials said they would convene briefly on Monday, then recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm was expected to have passed. Gov. Rick Scott canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.
At Miami International Airport, more than 550 flights Sunday were canceled. Inside the American Airlines terminal, people craned for a look out of 1 of the doors as a particularly strong band of Isaac began lashing the airport with strong rain and high wind.
Michele Remillard said she was trying to get a seat on a flight to New Orleans, well aware the city could be affected by Isaac later this week. In coastal Plaquemines Parish, La., crews rushed to protect the levees that keep floodwaters from reaching that New Orleans suburb.
"It's a little scary," said Remillard, who was in town for a wedding. "But I need to get home, you know? And if the storm comes my way again, who knows, I might have to come back here."
In Mississippi, officials were drafting an emergency declaration that the governor could sign as early as Sunday. Evacuations had not yet been ordered but were likely, especially in areas vulnerable to storm surge, said Greg Flynn, spokesman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
As of 5 p.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Key West, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph) and was moving to the northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).
Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center, meaning storm conditions are possible even in places not in Isaac's direct path.

And gave it to me. I never buy this because it always seems to come out very tough and dry, but I am on a very tight budget and can't bear to waste food. It is too hot to use the stove and so I was wondering if I could cook it in the crock pot? Any recipes/advice on how I should do it so it comes out tender and taste good?

How to defeat your enemies on the Internet

The Internet began as a pure place, free of malice and bad manners. Today, rudeness and horror abound.
From friends you know and people you've never met, abuse comes in many forms. Maybe it's a nasty comment on a Facebook photo. Maybe it's an insulting tweet. Maybe it's writing "U SMELL FUNNY" on your wall over and over and over again.
So what do you do if someone is being mean to you online? Cry? Sit there and take it? No. You survive. You prevail. Here's how to beat the bullies.
Take threats seriously
Look, if someone threatens you with physical harm via the Internet, go to the police. No matter what. No exceptions.
But if things are less severe?...
Take it offline
If your friend is being a jerk?on the Internet, try to hash it out off the Internet. As magical as it is, the Web just isn't a good way to express sincerity. Odds are, you two will misunderstand each other online and exacerbate your spat. Just bury the hatchet face to face.
Tattle on them
It's easy to talk smack?online. And it's just as easy to whine to the authorities about it. There is shame in telling on people in kindergarten, or in the mafia. But not online. Snitching is just a tool in your belt, not a sign of weakness.
Twitter doesn't have a formal policy against being mean. But actual threats, privacy invasion, and spamming are all verboten???as are "abusive" tweets, which is a little nebulous. If you think you're being abused, not just in the midst of an argument, report the infringing messages here. If Twitter agrees with you, your antagonist will either be warned or suspended.
The same goes for Facebook: Every post can be reported directly to Zuckerberg's Internet police???and luckily for you, victim, Facebook is much stricter than Twitter. On paper, at least. The Book declares the following for its users:
You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user.
You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.
It's extremely easy to report stuff you don't like. If Facebook doesn't like it either, the transgressor can have posts deleted or be suspended from the service.
Gmail, like email in general, is pretty much still the wild west. So unless you get a subject line stating, "I'm going to strangle you tonight," you're pretty much on your own. Google provides an abuse reporting area, but really, a call to the police should be your first move. In a trial, emails are certainly admissible as evidence.
Ignore it
The moral high road isn't fun, but if it were, it wouldn't be so moral and high. It might be satisfying to see your foe banned from Facebook or Twitter, but maybe the best satisfaction is not giving them the satisfaction. Harassing tweets? Ignore them. Rude IM? Ignore. Petty Facebook comment? Ignore. The silent treatment is the best way to make a bully bored?and when they're bored, they'll move on in search of a better reaction.
Seal yourself off
Block and delete. You probably don't want something insulting you on your own wall???what are you, a chump? So delete it and block the infringer. If you really want to piss someone off, hide your wall and photos from the bully without blocking them entirely???a nice middle finger, albeit not the most mature move. Create a filter on Gmail that'll send their email straight to the trash?be sure to let them know first. Block 'em on Twitter. It'll be like they never existed in the first place.
Fight back?
And then, there's this. The counterattack. This is risky, and perhaps even ill-advised, but a troll can be shocked into submission by the power of your own typing. I'm ugly? No, you're ugly, and we all know why your parents got divorced. Oh, I'm an idiot because I support [Presidential Candidate]? Here's an educated, 500 word explanation of how you don't have your facts straight. Mic drop. Shut up. Posting an embarrassing picture of me on Facebook? Cool! Here's an album of that time you puked in my basement and fell asleep in it. Maybe I'll tag your parents in the middle of the puddle.
Is this petty? Yes. Will it potentially make your situation exponentially worse? Yes. But is there a perverse joy in fighting it out online? Of course???it's in the Web's soul. Just be ready for a long engagement that publicly degrades everyone involved.

If you have been trying to train multiple pets at the same time, please make sure that you are not doing it in the wrong manner. I am not talking about the training methods for each command, but the training method for each pet.
Pet training, while not hard by itself, can become quite frustrating to an owner who has multiple pets. Dogs are creatures of habit, and they will tend to do those habits which they consider to be beneficial to them. In the case of a multiple dog household, these dogs will tend to play with each other.
When you have more then one pet, you simply cannot train them together properly when you are A)alone or B) working with them both at the same exact time.
With some commands, such as sit, they may both sit, but they are not being given one person?s full attention. If you must train your pets at the same time, then try to get a training partner that can manage one pet while you work with the other.
In the event you cannot get a partner, then leave one pet in the house or crate them. But be prepared for some possible whining. Two pets that spend all day together might feel some separation anxiety. Get over it, this will pass, and you?re not hurting them. You may even decide to go to a location further away so that your pet cannot hear the whining. You want to cut down on as many distractions as you possibly can. When you have your pet alone, you can work with your pet?s full attention.
Make sure that you spend time with each pet for their own specific training regimen. Let them play as a reward for a training session well done.
By all means play with both your pet at the same time if you want. But you will need to take your pets out by themselves and dedicate time for individual training sessions. You will notice that your pets get better much faster, and with less aggravation. As they get progressively better you will be able to work them at the same time.

Brazil's Diego returns to Wolfsburg

WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) -Wolfsburg says Brazilian playmaker Diego will be back at the Bundesliga club this season after a one-year loan to Atletico Madrid.
The 27-year-old Diego was loaned out last summer following an incident on the last day of the 2010-11 season, when he stormed out of the team hotel after being told he was only a substitute in a crucial relegation battle.
In an open letter posted Friday on Wolfsburg's website, Diego says he was glad that Wolfsburg and his teammates were giving him "a second, fair chance." He added: "I hope that you, dear fans, will also give me this second chance."
Diego, who previously played for Juventus and Werder Bremen, has a contract with Wolfsburg that runs through 2014.

And once again, the Three Jaguars return! Our topic this week is so complex we?re going to have to split it up into three parts! Here?s part one. Enjoy!
Introduction
?????Relationships are the building blocks of business. We all know it? how many times have we heard something like ?It?s who you know?? Or maybe ?they got where they are because they?re friends with x?? Or even ?You?ve gotta network?? Usually these things are said with a sneer, as if we all know that it?s more important to be talented than it is to be good with people. But the Three Jaguars are here to tell you that there are hundreds of thousands of talented people who are also unsuccessful. It takes more than talent to make it. If the definition of professional success is ?enough people buy my work that I can make a living off of it,? then obviously, people are part of the equation. No people, no audience. No audience, no money.
?????Suddenly it makes a little more sense why ?it?s who you know? is such a common phrase. It takes more than one person to make a career out of your talent: not just your fans, but people who work to make your art available to them in any number of ways; and not just them, but even other artists, who are your peers and a place to turn to for advice and an understanding ear.
?????And the key to all these relationships? Is communication.
?????Ah, communication. So many ways to strengthen relationships? and so many ways to wreck them. You need to do a lot of communicating as a creative businessperson. Let?s get started.
Communicating with Fans and Customers and Patrons: Marketer
?????Our first target? Your fans, customers, and patrons. Some of you may remember from the first column on roles that Marketer is your customer-facing self?
But wait! Shouldn?t ARTIST be the one talking with fans? They?re fans of the art, after all?
?????Maybe so, but with rare exception, Artist is very sensitive to other people?s interpretations of her work. Too sensitive. Criticism offends or depresses her; lukewarm responses inspire doubt or resentment. Enthusiasm gets her talking? maybe too much, draining her interest in finishing the work, or revealing spoilers fans weren?t quite ready for, or distracting her so much she doesn?t spend any time doing anything productive.
?????No, Artist needs to be in the studio. Marketer is the only one with the aplomb and savvy to actually handle fans? who are, after all, also your customers, and entitled to their negative opinions and complaints as well as their enthusiasms.
?????So here?s the watchword for communicating with fans and customers: service.
?????Why?
?????Because your fans and customers and patrons are all supporting your creative endeavors. Whether it?s through their enthusiasm, their word-of-mouth recommendations or their dollars, they are participating in your career directly, by giving you free advertising (and the best kind according to studies), by funding you, and by cheering you on. They don?t have to do any of those things; you?re only one of many thousands of artists they could be supporting, but they?ve chosen you! So your job is to make them glad they?re spending their time and attention on your work: by comporting yourself with respect for them and ensuring that they are pleased with the quality of the products they are selecting to get your work into their hands.
?????Remember: your art, when it trades hands, is a product. Even if you?re posting it for free, that free download or webpage or sample is still a product, which means Marketer is the one in charge of packaging it, making it available, and dealing with people?s responses to it. Artist is going to be verrrrrrrrry tempted to butt into this relationship, but she doesn?t belong here.
?????So let?s talk specifics.
How Do I Talk to Customers?
Some principles first:
1. Be interested.
?????These are people who are interested in your work; it behooves you to be interested in them. Listen to their response to what you?re creating. Listen to their experience when they buy something from you. Tell yourself ?I will react to all this later, for now, I will pretend like they?re talking about someone else?s work, not mine.?
?????Did something touch them? Why? Make notes. Artist did something right; she?ll want to know.
?????Did they really love the product? Was the print perfectly trimmed? Was the mug exactly what they asked for? Were the extra graphics in the e-book appreciated? This is valuable information for Marketer.
?????Did the buying experience please them? Was it easy for them to pay? Did they get what they wanted in a timely fashion? Were they pleased with the level of interaction they had with you or your distributor? This is information Marketer and Business Manager need to manage relationships with business partners (or to streamline your own processes).
?????Remember: people who like your work have at least one thing in common with you, and probably a lot more. Be interested in them, because they will be interesting people, and they have valid and useful things to say.
2. Be professional.
?????Most of us have heard terrible stories about Artists Behaving Badly on the internet. You don?t want to be one of those people, because those stories spread like wildfire and repairing the damage afterward is painful and will make Marketer weep.
?????You are a businessperson now; you have a license that says so. Be professional. That means be courteous, listen to what people are saying, and above all, don?t get emotional about it. If you absolutely must have an emotional reaction, have one in private, unload it on your friends and confidants, or write it down and then trash the letter. If you are prone to emotional responses, try not to use communication media that reveal it: avoid phones, and never send emails immediately; wait a day before responding.
3. Be kind.
?????Everyone remembers kindness, and everyone needs it. If you?re following the guidelines above, you?re already interested, and you?re already professional. Being courteous and thoughtful is icing on the cake.
?????And everyone loves cake.
So, having set out some basic rules, let?s look at some details.
Staying In Contact: Managing Your Inbox
?????Most of us are going to need to instate some rules to deal with fan communications. If you don?t have too many emails now to handle, don?t worry: you will. It?s best to set up some rules for yourself initially so you can manage your customer?s expectations as well as keep yourself from pulling out your hair. Try these:
1. Establish an email specifically for contact from customers.
?????Make this email different from the one you use for personal communication (no mixing up Mom?s birthday party invitation with someone?s request that you mail them a print). If you?re super-fancy-good with email, you can set up a rule that routes your business partner emails into a separate folder, or flags and labels them. If you?re not super-fancy-good with email, use a separate email address for your business partners, so you can manage those relationships without being distracted by dozens of fan comments on your latest offering.
1a. If you work primarily by phone, by all means, get a separate phone number for your business.
2. Batch your responses.
?????As tempting as it is to loom over your inbox like a hungry vulture, checking email can become a spasmodic reflex that interferes with you doing anything else. Decide right now when you?re going to answer your customer responses, whether it?s email or voice mail or social media, and do it all at once. Most of you will want to do it once or twice a day (maybe at lunch/day?s end). You can also do it biweekly or weekly, whichever suits your work-mode better. Whatever you do, though, choose a block of time and stick to it. This leads you to?
3. Office Hours.
?????It?s important to maintain communication with your customers. Nothing is more irritating than ordering a product and not receiving it, and not getting any explanation about why it hasn?t arrived. You want to remain available to help your customers and answer their questions, and also to answer as many fan responses as you can manage? but you don?t want to lose your work-time to it either. Once you?ve decided on a reasonable amount of time, and time period, for answering customer responses, post your ?office hours? somewhere people will see them. Explain that you will be checking email once a day at this time, and that you will be in the studio otherwise and appreciate people?s patience?if you?re not working, you?re not producing wonderful new things to share!
?????Do this even if your work is on a computer. It?s especially tempting for writers, digital artists, and other computer-using creatives to sneak a peek at their email or do a quick refresh on the blog to see if anyone?s said anything lately. Don?t! Close everything but the program you need to do your work and keep your eyes on the prize. If you?re bad at this, there are several programs that will lock down your computer?s shiny things for you so you can?t check until a certain time. Use them.
Templates (or Getting the Most Out of Your Response Time)
?????Most of us will get very similar kinds of questions from fans and customers. ?Do you sell a print of x?? or ?Do you offer electronic versions of that book? or ?Where can I find your jewelry in person,? etc, etc. The questions will be specific to your art form, but if you?ve already been working for a while you?ll already know exactly what I?m talking about, and have a list of those questions in your head. Write them down now!
?????Did you do it?
?????All right. Now, write a FAQ answering those questions and post it somewhere people can see it.
?????Hooray! You have reached about 10% of the people who will want to know something. The rest of them will still be sending you email or asking you in some other way directly. For those people, create a template answering the question. For instance, in response to ?can I buy a paper version of your e-book?:
?????Thanks for your interest in [Book Name]! At this time, [Book Name] is scheduled to hit print on [Date]. You can preorder it now from [Name of Store 1] or [Name of Store 2], or you can pick it up when it arrives in stores on [Date again].
?????If you?d like to follow my publication news more closely, you can also follow me on twitter at [name], check my Facebook profile [name], or follow my blog [here].
?????Thank you again!
?????You can have a separate template for books that aren?t due to hit print for whatever reason. Make a folder of these and keep them handy so you can cut and paste them into your messages. If you work primarily by phone, use scripts for the same purpose.
?????Keep an eye on your tone in these responses. You are aiming for friendly, courteous and professional; not personal, emotional or obsequious. As social creatures we are highly attuned to the suggestion of desperation, and a desperate-sounding business person makes people nervous: no one wants to be the target of hard-selling, or have their arms twisted by pity.
Doing Good When You Do Bad
?????The most important time to be good at communication is when something?s gone wrong? particularly when it?s your fault. As we mentioned previously in the Inner Customer chapter, the only way to transform a negative situation into a positive one is through superlative customer service. Here are the most common issues, and how to deal with them:
You Delivered Late (or Not at All)
?????You took on a commission, or promised to deliver something on schedule? and life interfered, or you hated the project. Your instinct is to curl into a ball in a dark corner and hope the fan doesn?t notice, or the customer will wait to complain until you can fix it.
?????The worst thing you can do is stop talking. If you see in advance you?re going to be late, contact the customer now and explain that there?s been a hold-up and you won?t be able to deliver on time. If you?re just barely going to miss the deadline, apologize; if you?re going to miss it by a huge margin, offer recompense. Imagine yourself as that customer and think about what it would take to make you feel like you?ve been treated fairly, and do that, whether it?s a partial or full refund, a coupon toward other services, or some other brainstorm.
?????If you?re on schedule and something happens the day of the deadline, then again, talk to the customer and explain the delay.
In either case, make a new deadline with milestones and tell your customer as you reach them so they feel comfortable that you are actually working on their product or project. Whatever you do, don?t stop communicating with your customer. You should be more communicative with them as you make errors, not less. Many people will forgive you for being late if you explain what?s going on and deliver on your new schedule. What they won?t forgive is being left in the dark with a broken promise.
?????Can you blame them?
The Product Was Messed Up
?????Closely related to missing a deadline is dealing with product problems. Someone?s print is on flimsy paper, that person?s e-book formatting is full of errors, yet another fan?s hand-painted glass ornament arrived in pieces. When dealing with product problems, first identify who was responsible. Are you the one making the product? If so, you?re the one who gets to troubleshoot and fix it.
?????Was it someone else?s issue, because you licensed the product to them? Then you have to figure out where the responsibility lies. Did you give your distributor a flawed file, or bad directions? Or was it solely their issue? Once you figure it out, you can either handle it yourself, or you can tell the customer to contact the distributor.
