NASCAR Mexico Series to race at Phoenix in 2013

The most popular motorsports series in Mexico will make its U.S. debut next season at Phoenix International Raceway.

The NASCAR Toyota Series will run at Phoenix on March 1 in conjunction with the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and K&N West Series. The race will be the 2013 season opener for the series, which runs Mexican V8 stock cars.

George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president of regional and touring series, said the race further develops a vision by chairman Brian France to offer racing that appeals to U.S. Latinos. NASCAR took its second-tier Nationwide Series to Mexico for four races from 2005-08.

"Mexico has a long and rich motorsports heritage but not necessarily in stock car racing," Silbermann said Monday. "The whole Mexican motorsports culture has followed either open-wheel racing or sports car racing. Brian made it very clear that a strategic goal of his was to reach a growing fan base and connect with Mexican-American fans here in the states. It was a seed that was planted in 2005 and it has now grown into a tree."

NASCAR and PIR officials scheduled a Tuesday news conference in Phoenix. The event will be a 75-lap race with a scheduled break after 50 laps for pit stops.

The series was launched in 2004 as the "Desaf?o Corona." NASCAR sanctioned it in 2007, and it was called the NASCAR Corona Series. It became the NASCAR Toyota Series this year, and has run 125 races, all in Mexico.

Bryan Sperber, president of PIR, said he jumped at the opportunity to host the first series race in the U.S. and the demographics of his track's fan base made it a natural fit.

"I look at this as a real opportunity for sports to bring people together," Sperber said. "It's no secret in terms of NASCAR that we want to broaden our consumer base and reach the Latino market. NASCAR Mexico allows us to reach out potentially to new race fans but also give exposure to this series and its drivers."

It's welcome exposure for 20-year-old points leader Daniel Suarez, who has relocated to Charlotte, N.C., in an attempt to climb through the NASCAR ranks.

Suarez has been identified as part of the NASCAR's Next 9 ? a group of nine drivers who are under 21 and represent the next wave of young talent. He's on track to become the youngest champion in series history, and won his first race in May at Mexico City.

Suarez said the chance to run at the same track on the same weekend as the premiere Sprint Cup Series gives Mexican drivers an opening to showcase their talent to prospective owners and sponsors.

"People can see what is going on in Mexico," he said. "There are fans who know nothing at all about racing in Mexico. This series is the best in Mexico, the racing is the best. We have more fans, the best drivers, the best sponsors and the chance to race in America is a very big first step."

The race at PIR is a one-year agreement, per NASCAR guidelines. But Silbermann said it's part of a long-term plan for NASCAR.

"This is an important race for making the connection on both sides of the border," he said. "From a business standpoint, a lot of the series sponsors and partners see the value of a race in the U.S., and everyone sees the value in building the sport among Spanish speaking audiences. We believe the race will shine a spotlight and be a pleasant eye-opener for fans when they see the high caliber of talent in that series."

Advice On How You Can Do Your Own Plumbing

Welcome to the complex world of plumbing! As you are about to read, there are many techniques, skills and equipment one must have in order to successfully do a plumbing job. A great maintenance routine for bathtub drains is to pour baking soda and vinegar into the drain opening once a month. Cover it with a plug or rag, since a chemical reaction should happen in the pipes. Let that sit for a while, and then run boiling hot water down it. This should help clear your pipes of accumulated hair and soap scum.

Don?t put oil, grease or fat into your drain. Oils will eventually harden and clog up your drain. This is primarily true if you are someone who has a garbage disposal; the fats will make the blades go slower and less freely. Get rid of any fat or oils outside or in the garbage can.

A good thing to do is clean your pipes as often as possible with a tool or drain cleaner! This is important for outside pipes or drains that tree roots can affect.

Worn out and malfunctioning plumbing should be repaired or replaced. While it is possible to patch some issues caused by damaged pipes, these are not permanent fixes. Buy a new part and permanently fix the problem.

The flapper valve is one of the most critical components of a toilet. The flapper is often the culprit if your toilet is leaking, especially if it?s relatively old, as toilet flappers deteriorate with age. Make sure the pressure on the chain is right; if the chain is fine, chances are the flapper is worn and should be replaced.

Hot water running through your copper plumbing lines can cause some minor expansion in the pipes. When this happens, the pipes will not fit into the pipe hangers, and will end up grinding against them. In the long run, this could damage those pipes. To help reduce this wear, wrap a piece of pipe tape on the pipe and put it back inside the hanger.

It?s easy to fix noisy pipes which squeak or sound like hammering. Any exposed pipes will need to be anchored. You are going to need a professional if the pipes will be located in the ceiling, walls, or the floors.

Some items, such as bananas, carrots, pumpkin and chicken skins are terrible for blades and they can be caught in the drain and clog it. Separate out these problem foods first, and throw them in a garbage can before dumping waste into the garbage disposal.

There are a lot of different ways to keep your plumbing running smoothly. As you are now aware, in the area of plumbing there is something anyone can do for every home. However, not every strategy works for every system. These tips have hopefully provided a base for you to repair or improve your plumbing system.

Sprott-Shaw College shutting down Maple Ridge campus

After more than five years at the corner of Lougheed Highway and 203rd Street, Sprott-Shaw College is closing the doors of its Maple Ridge campus.

The privately-owned college with more than 15 locations across B.C. is one of the only post-secondary options for residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who want to study locally.

According to Sprott-Shaw College's website, the Maple Ridge Campus has "been around for a long time, but we're a well-kept secret."

Sprott-Shaw College did not return requests for interview, however staff at the Maple Ridge campus confirmed the school would be closing down as of Friday, Sept. 28.

With the closure of Sprott-Shaw College, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District's private accredited post-secondary school, Ridge Meadows College, remains as one of the only local options for students studying past high school.

Douglas College previously operated a satellite campus based out of Thomas Haney secondary. However, its presence dwindled after the opening of the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam in the mid-1990s, eventually shutting close to 10 years ago.

Bruce Grady, district principal for Riverside Centre, which houses Ridge Meadows College, says the closure of Sprott-Shaw College opens new opportunities for Ridge Meadows College, the profits from which are used by the local school district to fund public education.

"With them leaving, we can look at offering courses," said Grady. "This may open up areas we've stayed away from in the past, because students were best served by Sprott-Shaw."

Ridge Meadows College offers certificate programs in early childhood education, dental reception, computer accounting, and office administration, as well as general interest courses.

Grady said prospective students should contact the college if there are programs they are interested in that aren't offered.

"If there's a program that people are interested in, we'll look at the demand and look at getting it ready for September," he said.

Grady said while there may be little in the way of local post-secondary options, elsewhere in the Fraser Valley there are many schools competing to attract local students.

"There's been tremendous post-secondary expansion in the Fraser Valley in the past decade," he notes.

University of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Trinity Western University, Simon Fraser University, and Douglas College each have campuses within 20 km of downtown Maple Ridge.

Sprott-Shaw College also has campuses in Abbotsford and Surrey.

A new portrait has been acquired by the Canadian War Museum and will contribute to new exhibits recognizing Canada?s war in Afghanistan.
