NEW YORK (Reuters) - Disgraced Wall Street titan and philanthropist Rajat Gupta was sentenced to only two years in prison, a much lighter sentence than U.S. prosecutors had demanded, even though the federal judge who imposed it on Wednesday called his insider trading crimes "disgusting" and "a terrible breach of trust."
Gupta was also ordered to pay a $5 million fine. He was convicted in Manhattan federal court last June for leaking Goldman Sachs
Some legal experts said the sentence came as a surprise, while others said the judge struck a fine balance.
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff told a somber courtroom audience, including Gupta's wife and four adult daughters, that the illegal sharing of corporate secrets at the height of the 2008 financial crisis "was the functional equivalent of stabbing Goldman in the back."
Gupta, 63, gave no visible reaction to the sentence, which was given at the end of a 30-minute statement in which the judge spelled out the businessman's "extraordinary" philanthropy over decades that stood in stark contrast to his crimes.

During Gupta's trial, the court heard how Gupta had tipped off his then friend and business associate Rajaratnam between September and October of 2008. Within minutes of a conference call of members of Goldman's board on September 23, 2008, Gupta told Rajaratnam that influential investor Warren Buffett was infusing $5 billion into the investment bank. Rajaratnam traded on the information as the market was closing.
In his statement on Wednesday, the judge said the tip "was not only overwhelming, but it was disgusting in its implications ... a terrible breach of trust" at a time when Goldman Sachs was in turmoil.
But the judge also said: "I have never encountered a defendant whose past history suggests such an extraordinary devotion ... to people in need."
Rakoff ordered Gupta to begin his sentence on January 8, 2013. He denied Gupta's lawyer's bid to have him freed on bail pending an appeal, which could last as long as two years.
The former Goldman director is the most influential corporate figure to be convicted in the wide U.S. probe of insider trading involving fund managers, traders, consultants and executives. He is a former global head of the McKinsey & Co management consultancy, and once sat on the boards of Procter & Gamble Co
Gupta's sentence was less than the eight to 10 years sought by prosecutors, but more than the punishment of probation and community service in Rwanda that Gupta's lawyers had proposal. The judge dismissed that proposal as "a kind of Peace Corps for insider traders."
The sentence was also less than some other insider trading defendants who went to trial and received four, five and even 10 years imprisonment. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence, one of the longest for insider trading.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Tarlowe on Wednesday argued for a sentence of at least eight years, telling the court "Mr Gupta knew as much about the sanctity of these types of corporate confidences as anybody, and that's what makes it so shocking."
New York securities class action and shareholder rights lawyer Mark Rifkin said the judge "understood both sides of the argument, and the relatively light sentence he imposed balances Gupta's misuse of his position against a lifetime of good work."
But Andrew Stoltmann, an attorney and investor rights advocate based in Chicago, wondered whether Gupta's "Mother Teresa-like halo" had warranted a sentence that was "little more than a slap on the wrist."
"He had such an important role at some of these companies that it is kind of the ultimate betrayal of trust."
When Gupta took his turn to address the court, he read for six minutes from a prepared statement, using bland language that stopped short of fully admitting his conduct, but apologizing to "extraordinary institutions and outstanding people" he knows and to his family.
"I feel terrible that they have been burdened with totally undeserved negative attention. I apologize to them and ask for their forgiveness."
Federal judges have wide leeway in sentencing, and Rakoff has a reputation for veering from guidelines designed for courts in handing down punishment. Gupta had faced a maximum sentence of 20 years for securities fraud and five years for conspiracy.
Gupta's lawyer, Gary Naftalis, arguing for a lenient sentence, said his client had suffered a "fall from grace of Greek tragedy proportions."
"This was an iconic figure who had been a role model for countless people around the globe," Naftalis said. "He is no more."
The case is USA v Gupta, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-cr-907.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? An Indiana University study has provided preliminary evidence that by measuring brain activity through the use of neuroimaging, researchers can predict who is likely to have an easier time getting off drugs and alcohol, and who will need extra help.
"We can also see how brain activity changes as people recover from their addictions," said Joshua Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington, part of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The chronic occurrence of relapse underscores the need for improved methods of treatment and relapse prevention. One potential cause for relapse is deficient self-regulatory control over behavior and decision-making. Specifically this lack of self-regulatory ability in substance dependent individuals has been associated with dysfunction of a mesolimbic-frontal brain network. Reduced activity within this self-regulatory brain network has previously been implicated in relapse, but the specific relationship between this network, self-regulatory ability and recovery is yet to be determined.
The current study explores neurophysiological and cognitive indicators of self-regulatory ability in a community-based sample of substance dependent individuals during the first three months of addiction treatment. The study tests participants' risk-taking inclinations through what is called a Balloon Analog Risk Task, a game in which the participants can decide whether to add increasing amounts of air to a balloon, gaining rewards until it pops. Those who took greater risks were shown to have reduced brain activity. By the same token, those who took less risk showed greater brain activity. By three months those who were successful in treatment also demonstrated a pattern of brain activation that coincided with the risk level of cues during the balloon risk task decision-making. In individuals who relapsed, risk-related activation was limited to certain brain regions, possibly signaling the anticipated reward rather than the risk of negative outcome.

Headaches are common, but they have a wide variety of causes and treatments. People who are susceptible to headaches often find themselves confused about how to identify the different types, and as a result they can end up suffering from chronic pain for much longer than is necessary. Read on to discover the five main types of headaches, and to learn what you can do to help yourself in each case.
?
1) Tension headaches:
Seventy percent of headaches are tension headaches, which arise from contractions that occur within the muscles of the head and neck. Usually, tension headaches feel like a tight band or a feeling of pressure that extends all the way around the head. The main causes are stress, bad posture, excessive tiredness, and eyestrain (from an inappropriate glasses prescription or sometimes just from working at a computer for hours). However, such headaches can also result from smoking or alcohol habits, and (far less avoidably) from hormonal changes that occur during a woman?s menstrual cycle. Tension headaches have no particular gender or age bias, though the majority of sufferers are adolescents or adults. When caused by posture that is poor or overly tense, physiotherapy and conscious amendments to the way you sit and move can sometimes alleviate these headaches. In most other cases, the best way to treat them is with over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or Tylenol.

2) Cluster headaches:
Cluster headaches are most commonly experienced by men and are known for the acute periodic pain that they cause. These headaches are not currently very well understood, but are thought to involve blood vessel dilation putting pressure on a nerve. The pain experienced is usually one-sided, of a ?drilling? quality, and located around the eye or at the back of the eye. Cluster headaches strike the sufferer in bursts that last between fifteen minutes to many hours at a time, and they are thought to be the most agonizingly painful type of primary headache. Some people also develop a red eye, a drooping eyelid, and intense feelings of restlessness. If you experience cluster headaches, you will probably find that your normal painkillers do not relieve your symptoms and you will have to be specially prescribed preventative or abortive medications.

3) Migraines:
Twenty percent of headaches are migraines, which can be especially painful headaches that result from constrictions that cause decreased blood flow in the vessels of the head and neck. They are more commonly suffered by women, and usually produce a one-sided and intense head pain. This is often accompanied by strong nausea and a dislike of loud noise or bright light. A specific type of migraine (namely migraine ?with aura?) causes visual disturbances such as strange flashes of light or even partial blindness. Sometimes the cause of a migraine headache is utterly mysterious, but some of the identified causes include a genetic predisposition, smoking tobacco, an insufficient amount of sleep, the onset of a menstrual period, drinking alcohol, and taking hormonal contraceptives. Some people also find that their migraines are triggered by certain foods, most commonly dairy food (especially cheese) or chocolate. Unfortunately, painkillers seldom do much to relieve the pain of a migraine, and most people find it best to try to sleep until it passes. However, if your doctor diagnoses you with migraine then you may be prescribed preventative medication.

4) Medication overuse headaches:
Also known as ?rebound headaches?, medication overuse headaches can occur when you take painkillers on a very regular basis for a substantial period of time. They usually develop after another sort of chronic headache requires regular painkiller use. The original type of headache morphs into a medication overuse headache that is sometimes indistinguishable from the original pain that you suffered. When such headaches do occur, they tend to strike every day, meaning that is very tempting to continue taking painkilling medications. If you think that your headache might be of this sort, your doctor will probably advise abstaining from painkillers. Unfortunately, even without further painkillers it can take up to a few weeks for a medication overuse headache to abate.

5) Sinus headaches:
When your sinuses are inflamed by an infection, this can stop mucus from draining as it would normally. This pressure can then cause a dull ache around the bridge of your nose, your forehead, or your cheekbones. The pain of sinus headaches can usually be temporarily alleviated with your normal painkillers (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen), but it is important that you be properly diagnosed so that you can be prescribed a decongestant (in the form of a nasal spray or tablets). In addition, some find that an over-the-counter nasal spray of saline reduces sinus swelling by helping to flush out mucus.
?
While most headaches are more uncomfortable than dangerous, there are some sinister medical conditions that also involve head pain. When a headache is coupled with confusion, paralysis of a limb, neck stiffness or slurred speech, it warrants investigation by a neurologist as well as your regular doctor. When you do visit your doctor, make sure to mention any new sensations or problems even if they appear disconnected from your headaches. Further, any headache that develops suddenly and is described as ?the worst headache of one?s life? should be treated as a medical emergency (as this can sometimes be the only symptom of a highly dangerous hemorrhage). Finally, please note that if you are experiencing a new kind of headache then this always warrants a trip to see a doctor as well.

BOSTON (AP) ? Combined results from two studies of an experimental Alzheimer's drug suggest it might modestly slow mental decline, especially in patients with mild disease.
Taken separately, the studies on the drug ? Eli Lilly & Co.'s solanezumab ? missed their main goals of significantly slowing the mind-robbing disease or improving activities of daily living. But pooled results found 34 percent less mental decline in mild Alzheimer's patients compared to those on a fake treatment for 18 months.
Doctors called the results encouraging although probably not good enough to win approval of the drug now, without another study to confirm there is a benefit. Investors were more enthused, driving Lilly's stock up about 5 percent on Monday and about 19 percent since August, when the company described the results in general terms.
Detailed results were revealed for the first time Monday at an American Neurological Association conference in Boston.
"It's certainly not the home run we all wanted, but we're very encouraged by these results," said Maria Carillo, chief science officer for the Alzheimer's Association, which had no role in the research.
Dr. Stephen Salloway, an Alzheimer's expert at Brown University, agreed.
"It's exciting to see that there may be clinical benefit," he said, but it is modest and may not make a difference in how well patients live ? what matters most to them and their families, he said.
About 35 million people worldwide have dementia, and Alzheimer's is the most common type. In the U.S., about 5 million have Alzheimer's. Current medicines such as Aricept and Namenda just temporarily ease symptoms. There is no known cure.
Solanezumab (sol-ah-NAYZ-uh-mab) is one of three drugs in late-stage testing that seek to alter the course of the disease. Results on one drug were disappointing, and results of the other won't be ready until early next year.
Solanezumab aims to bind to and help clear the sticky deposits that clog patients' brains. The two studies each had about 1,000 patients, about two-thirds with mild disease and one-third with moderately severe Alzheimer's, in 16 countries. Their average age was 75.
The main measures were two tests ? one reflecting language, memory and thinking and the other, ability to perform daily activities such as eating and grooming. The combined results on the mild disease patients showed a nearly 2-point difference in the roughly 90-point score on thinking abilities. Previous studies suggest that a change of 3 to 4 on the score is needed to show a clinical benefit, like an improvement in how well patients can take care of themselves.
"It's a small difference," Dr. Rachelle Doody of Baylor College of Medicine said of the drug's effect. She heads a nationwide research network funded by the National Institute on Aging that did an independent analysis of Lilly's results on the studies and presented them Monday at the conference.
Still, "you slow the decline" with the drug, she said.
Independent experts cautioned that the improvement was small, and needs to be verified in another study.
"I hate to get too enthusiastic ... there's a flicker of a signal" of benefit, but less than what some other once-promising treatments showed, said Dr. Sam Gandy, head of Alzheimer's disease research at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of Alzheimer's research at the Mayo Clinic, called the drug's effect "subtle" and said it may mean just that "somebody remembers one extra word out of a 15-word list" without any real improvement in how well they live.
The drug, if ever approved, is likely to be expensive, and that means "we need more evidence" of its benefit to justify its use, Petersen said.
Encouragingly, solanezumab had few side effects. About 1 percent of people on the drug had some chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart. There were few cases of worrisome brain swelling and small bleeding in the brain, an effect that caused concern with another experimental Alzheimer's drug, bapineuzumab by Pfizer Inc. and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Alzheimer Immunotherapy unit.
That drug failed to help patients in two late-stage studies announced last month, but did show signs of hitting its target and clearing deposits from the brain.
The Lilly drug seems to be safer, and that is an advantage, said Dr. Norman Relkin, head of a memory disorders program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
"There is some cause for encouragement here. It's not the magnitude we'd like to see" but certainly warrants further studies on the drug, he said.
Relkin heads testing of the third drug in late-stage development ? Gammagard, by Baxter International Inc. Results are expected early next year.
Meanwhile, Dr. Eric Siemers, senior medical director for Lilly, said the company will discuss its results and next steps with the Food and Drug Administration.
Lilly shares closed up $2.55, or 5.3 percent, to $50.78. During the day they peaked at $50.94, their highest price since April 2008. (This is also their highest closing price since that month.) The shares are up 19.8 percent since August 24.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A glimpse into the shadow world of Iran's main spy agency is now a click away.
In an unexpected display of outreach, the Intelligence Ministry now hosts a website with addresses of provincial offices, appeals for tips and anti-American essays that mock rising obesity rates, large prison populations and school shootings.
There's no mission statement on the site, but it appears part of stepped-up attempts by Iran's leadership to promote national unity and project its authority amid Western sanctions and international isolation. After protests in Tehran last week over Iran's slumping currency, the nationally broadcast Friday prayers tapped heavily into the theme of shared sacrifice in times of trouble. And on Wednesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the sanctions as a "war against a nation."
The new website also fits into Iran's narrative of fighting a "soft war" in cyberspace against Western cultural and political influences. For more than a year, Iran's leaders have touted plans for a "clean" Internet that could presumably try to block Western content, but Web experts have raised questions about its technical feasibility.
"The ministry is going online to make its presence known to the Iranian public, especially the young who use the Internet," said Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian-born political analyst based in Israel. "This is basically a show of force."
What the new Farsi-language site, www.vaja.ir, lacks in innovation (mostly a simple list of stories and links), it makes up for in pure anti-American bluntness.
Click on "America from a Different Perspective." The list of shame includes the huge U.S. prison population, rising obesity, school shooting statistics, why supporters of euthanasia seek to "kill grandparents" and how giant chain stores such as Walmart are smothering small businesses.
Another essay claims the chief goal of U.S. economic sanctions is not to force concessions over Tehran's nuclear program, but to incite civil unrest. It specifically cites U.S. diplomat Jillian Burns, who set up Washington's first Iranian monitoring office in Dubai in 2006 and is currently the consul in Herat in western Afghanistan, where Iran has strong cultural and economic ties. There was no immediate comment from the State Department.
Tehran-based political commentator Hamid Reza Shokouhi sees the website ? the web name is the Farsi acronym for the Intelligence Ministry ? as part of a new image-building campaign by Iran's ruling system in the Internet era, which has left authorities in a constant struggle to block opposition sites and Western influences.
"Economic and military threats against Iran have increased. Under such circumstances, it is necessary to reduce the gap between the people and the ruling system," said Shokouhi. "The website is a move in this direction. This is a big deal."
It's far from the first time that Iran's leadership has planted its flag in cyberspace.
Websites have operated for years for Khamenei and others including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ? in Farsi, English and Arabic. More than a dozen state-run and semiofficial news services also flood the Web around the clock.
"The leadership, particularly within the hardline elements of the Intelligence Ministry, has an obsession with the notion that Washington is coordinating a soft revolution to unseat the Islamic Republic," said Suzanne Maloney, an Iranian affairs expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington.
Part of Iran's counterstrategy appears to be a kind of information overload in response to U.S. initiatives, such as the State Department's launch last year of a "virtual embassy" in English and Farsi that seeks to reach out to ordinary Iranians. The site was quickly blocked by Iranian authorities, but firewall bypasses such as proxy servers are widely used by Iran's young and tech-skilled population.
"There is probably an element of mimicry here as well," said Maloney. "The Iranians enjoy turning the table on Washington and imitating American tactics."
Last week, a U.S. broadcast oversight board accused Iran of jamming regional radio and television programming that includes the Persian services for the Voice of America and the BBC. And on Monday ? two days after the website was launched ? Iran's Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi claimed that Iran's secret services have the upper hand in the Web war with the West.
"The intelligence apparatus confronts enemy measures in the cyber front," the official IRNA news agency quoted Moslehi as saying.
The intelligence minister was at the center of one of Iran's most public political feuds. Khamenei last year demanded Moslehi keep the post despite objections from Ahmadinejad, who was so angered that he boycotted government meetings for more than a week. In response, the ruling clerics arrested dozens of Ahmadinejad's allies and left him politically weakened entering his final year in office.
A journalist at Tehran's moderate Shargh newspaper, Soroush Farhadian, interprets the new website as an effort by intelligence agency to gain its own voice.
"One of the objectives is to demonstrate its independent position rather than speaking through the semiofficial news agencies," he said.
There is also a potential for touches of candor amid the high-voltage propaganda. One article appears to buck the official line that sanctions on Iran's oil exports are meaningless. It notes Iran has "paid heavy costs" in its showdown with the West.
"On the one hand, Iran has faced problems with a cut in its main source of revenue. On the other hand, the West has taken all measures to force Iran to give up its nuclear program," the post said. "Despite all the costs suffered by the West to stop Iran's nuclear program, the Islamic Republic has continued its path and the West has failed."

Because what happens in early childhood lays the foundation for later success in school and life, technically all 28 indicators in the report have something to do with early childhood. But for the sake of understanding how well we are doing at laying the foundation, let?s examine indicators specific to early childhood.
The best news is that Contra Costa is seeing significant improvement in two indicators of literacy:
Even in our highly technological world, literacy remains the basis for understanding, learning, and advancement. And early literacy ? the exposure to language, vocabulary, books, pictures, letters and words from infancy ? is the foundation for reading success in school. That?s why third grade reading is an important reflection on the success of efforts to promote literacy in the years before kindergarten.
But even with these increases, only 68% of Contra Costa?s young children are read to every day and only 53% read at grade level in 3rd grade. There?s still a lot of room to grow in these areas. And when you look deeper into the data, you find significant disparities by race and ethnicity.
While 63% of Latino families in Contra Costa report reading to their children, compared with 75% of white families, Latino and African-American children are reading at grade level at only half the rate of white and Asian children. The number of Latino and African-American children not reading at grade level represents about one-fifth of all Contra Costa third graders. This should be a red flag to all who hope to educate, train, and employ the future work forces of our county.
To address this disparity, it will require concerted coordinated efforts not just by schools, but by everyone who supports families and children.? It?s time to double down on our current efforts to support and educate families, raise the quality of early learning, and promote early literacy.

The most popular motorsports series in Mexico will make its U.S. debut next season at Phoenix International Raceway.
The NASCAR Toyota Series will run at Phoenix on March 1 in conjunction with the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and K&N West Series. The race will be the 2013 season opener for the series, which runs Mexican V8 stock cars.
George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president of regional and touring series, said the race further develops a vision by chairman Brian France to offer racing that appeals to U.S. Latinos. NASCAR took its second-tier Nationwide Series to Mexico for four races from 2005-08.
"Mexico has a long and rich motorsports heritage but not necessarily in stock car racing," Silbermann said Monday. "The whole Mexican motorsports culture has followed either open-wheel racing or sports car racing. Brian made it very clear that a strategic goal of his was to reach a growing fan base and connect with Mexican-American fans here in the states. It was a seed that was planted in 2005 and it has now grown into a tree."
NASCAR and PIR officials scheduled a Tuesday news conference in Phoenix. The event will be a 75-lap race with a scheduled break after 50 laps for pit stops.
The series was launched in 2004 as the "Desaf?o Corona." NASCAR sanctioned it in 2007, and it was called the NASCAR Corona Series. It became the NASCAR Toyota Series this year, and has run 125 races, all in Mexico.
Bryan Sperber, president of PIR, said he jumped at the opportunity to host the first series race in the U.S. and the demographics of his track's fan base made it a natural fit.
"I look at this as a real opportunity for sports to bring people together," Sperber said. "It's no secret in terms of NASCAR that we want to broaden our consumer base and reach the Latino market. NASCAR Mexico allows us to reach out potentially to new race fans but also give exposure to this series and its drivers."
It's welcome exposure for 20-year-old points leader Daniel Suarez, who has relocated to Charlotte, N.C., in an attempt to climb through the NASCAR ranks.
Suarez has been identified as part of the NASCAR's Next 9 ? a group of nine drivers who are under 21 and represent the next wave of young talent. He's on track to become the youngest champion in series history, and won his first race in May at Mexico City.
Suarez said the chance to run at the same track on the same weekend as the premiere Sprint Cup Series gives Mexican drivers an opening to showcase their talent to prospective owners and sponsors.
"People can see what is going on in Mexico," he said. "There are fans who know nothing at all about racing in Mexico. This series is the best in Mexico, the racing is the best. We have more fans, the best drivers, the best sponsors and the chance to race in America is a very big first step."
The race at PIR is a one-year agreement, per NASCAR guidelines. But Silbermann said it's part of a long-term plan for NASCAR.
"This is an important race for making the connection on both sides of the border," he said. "From a business standpoint, a lot of the series sponsors and partners see the value of a race in the U.S., and everyone sees the value in building the sport among Spanish speaking audiences. We believe the race will shine a spotlight and be a pleasant eye-opener for fans when they see the high caliber of talent in that series."

A great maintenance routine for bathtub drains is to pour baking soda and vinegar into the drain opening once a month. Cover it with a plug or rag, since a chemical reaction should happen in the pipes. Let that sit for a while, and then run boiling hot water down it. This should help clear your pipes of accumulated hair and soap scum.
Don?t put oil, grease or fat into your drain. Oils will eventually harden and clog up your drain. This is primarily true if you are someone who has a garbage disposal; the fats will make the blades go slower and less freely. Get rid of any fat or oils outside or in the garbage can.
A good thing to do is clean your pipes as often as possible with a tool or drain cleaner! This is important for outside pipes or drains that tree roots can affect.
Worn out and malfunctioning plumbing should be repaired or replaced. While it is possible to patch some issues caused by damaged pipes, these are not permanent fixes. Buy a new part and permanently fix the problem.
The flapper valve is one of the most critical components of a toilet. The flapper is often the culprit if your toilet is leaking, especially if it?s relatively old, as toilet flappers deteriorate with age. Make sure the pressure on the chain is right; if the chain is fine, chances are the flapper is worn and should be replaced.
Hot water running through your copper plumbing lines can cause some minor expansion in the pipes. When this happens, the pipes will not fit into the pipe hangers, and will end up grinding against them. In the long run, this could damage those pipes. To help reduce this wear, wrap a piece of pipe tape on the pipe and put it back inside the hanger.
It?s easy to fix noisy pipes which squeak or sound like hammering. Any exposed pipes will need to be anchored. You are going to need a professional if the pipes will be located in the ceiling, walls, or the floors.
Some items, such as bananas, carrots, pumpkin and chicken skins are terrible for blades and they can be caught in the drain and clog it. Separate out these problem foods first, and throw them in a garbage can before dumping waste into the garbage disposal.
There are a lot of different ways to keep your plumbing running smoothly. As you are now aware, in the area of plumbing there is something anyone can do for every home.
